2015 Jeep RenegadeIn any industry, a 37% sales increase in just 12 months is an ambitious goal, but this would seem particularly true in the oft-encumbered automotive sector. Nonetheless, back in January, that was exactly what Chrysler Group CEO Sergio Marchionne predicted for the Jeep brand. He called upon Jeep dealers the world over to buckle down and bring the annual sales from 731,565 all the way up to a million. It was such an ambitious goal that even Jeep president Mike Manley expressed some reservations: “It’s a stretch to say we would do it in ’14, but if not in ’14, we should certainly be on track in ’15.”

Fast forward nine months, though, and Marchionne’s big talk is looking Increasingly prescient. With September sales records in, Jeep has already surpassed last year’s mark with sales of about 747,000, and the steady month-by-month increases put Jeep on track to hit that oh-so-ambitious 1-million mark.

“The biggest part, and what we’re proudest of … is that every Jeep is up,” Jeep marketing director Jim Morrison said to The Detroit News. “We’re not taking all of our customer base and rejuvenating them; we’re bringing new customers to the brand and every Jeep is continuing to grow.”

The sales numbers have been powered by the overwhelming success of classic Jeep models like the Wrangler, Cherokee and Grand Cherokee, and hopes that the new baby of the family, the 2015 Jeep Renegade, will add additional oomph to the numbers when it becomes available a bit later this year. The combined efforts of the old and the new are expected to push the figures over the one-mil mark.

“They’re growing like crazy and I don’t see any reason to think that they will not continue in that direction,” said Kelley Blue Book senior analyst Karl Brauer.
